Are there border controls and visa checks within the EU?

  • A valid ID card/Passport should be carried when travelling in the EU, as it may be required for identification or security purposes.
  • A valid ID card or Passport will have to be presented when travelling to or returning from the five non-Schengen countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania).
  • The only valid ID is the one obtained from national authorities.
